VENTNOR got back to winning ways at the weekend, but it was a difficult afternoon for most of the Isle of Wight’s cricket outfits.

In Division One of the Southern Premier Cricket League, a travelling Ventnor side beat Portsmouth by three wickets.

Winning the toss and electing to field, Ventnor limited the hosts to 242 – Ross Whyte (3-33) and Rob Snell (2-47) taking scalps.

In reply, Ventnor hit 245, with Henry Edwards (83), Whyte (53) and Sam Mills (35) the standouts.

Meanwhile, in Hampshire League Division Two, a visiting Ryde side fell to Basingstoke and North Hants by five wickets.

The hosts won the toss and elected to field, with Ashley Goldsmith (53) and Tom Durman (47) contributing the most to Ryde’s 206.

In response, the hosts hit 209 – Durman (3-49) the only bowler to put up much resistance.

Over in Division Three (South), Shanklin and Godshill were brushed aside by a visiting Totton and Eling side.

Invited to bat first, 104 was all the Islanders could muster, and the visitors hit back with aplomb, hitting 107 with seven wickets to spare.

Ryde II’s game against Fareham and Crofton was called off in Division Four (South), as was Ventnor II’s game against Folland.

In Island League Division Two, Cowes made short work of Northwood, winning by 99 runs.

The hosts hit 237, thanks in large part to Chris Higgins (74) and Josh Rice (73), despite Nick Stafford claiming three scalps.

Northwood could only muster 138 in response, Muditha Naresh (4-30) and Luke Ridoutt (3-22) stifling the opposition.
