IN THEIR first full season playing at Newclose County Cricket Ground, Newport Cricket Club enjoyed a cakewalk to secure titles for their first and second teams.

It is a measure of the stability of the club the firsts went unbeaten all season to win the Island Cricket League Division 1 title and the Isle of Wight Senior Cup.

It was their second such achievement in the space of two years.

Victory over Ventnor III confirmed the Division 1 title, with Harry Dye hitting 70 and Aaron Hartup taking three wickets in their win.

They also beat Arreton in the cup final by an incredible 200 runs, with Adam Wilson hitting 117.

The second team beat Ventnor III to win the Isle of Wight 2nd/3rd Team Trophy by 61 runs.

Club captain, Gareth Bricknell, said: "It has been an incredibly successful season for all involved at Newport Cricket Club.

"In our first full season at our new home, Newclose, we achieved three trophies on the field, on top of more developments as a club.

"We have a very healthy number of colts, from our All Stars/Dynamos, starting at the age of five, through to our U15s. We also introduced a ladies team.

"I’m proud to be a part of a fantastic group of volunteers and players, who keep grassroots sport going and who allow so many to enjoy playing sport."
