An Isle of Wight cyclist gave up his chance for a race win to help an injured competitor and medical staff following a crash.

Last Sunday (April 14), Rollo Dixon of the NAUT Cycling Club and Race Team headed to the Velo Club Venta Spring Road Race on the Crawley course near Winchester.

The first couple of laps of the race were full-on, with Rollo finding himself near the back of the bunch.

On the third lap, Rollo moved right up towards the front of the peloton but, unfortunately, was caught behind a crash.

He withdrew to help direct traffic whilst medical staff attended to the rider before heading to the finish line to cheer the race home.

Speaking about the race, Rollo said: “I felt rough to start with, but after a couple of laps, I loosened up, and I managed to move forward easily.

“We upped the pace and quickly strung out the bunch. Not sure how I managed to stop and avoid the crash – I thought I was going to have to try to bunny-hop it.

“For a split-second, I considered re-joining, but when I saw the rider down, I knew I had to stay.

“I hope the injured riders are on the mend very soon and look forward to coming back next time."
